Chapter 8

Emery

I hesitated outside the door to the dining hall.

Gentry’s hand was comforting in mine, but Aleister was in there. I knew he would be okay with Gentry and me being together, but a small part of me was worried he might be a little upset. When we didn’t go in right away, Remy, my escort for the day, hung back to give us our privacy.

“You alright?” Gentry asked quietly. A smile teased his lips while he pulled me to the side of the door and into a small alcove. Lightly, he ran his fingers over my left wrist, sending a shiver down my spine.

“Not fair,” I murmured.

“Who said I play fair?” he whispered, flashing his fangs.

Standing on my toes, I nipped his bottom lip, and he growled. “Two can play at that game, you know.” I barely brushed my lips against his and pulled back, smiling at the subtle red light in his eyes. Glancing toward the hall, I cringed.

“What’s bugging you?”

“What do you think? I can’t help it. I care about him, too, and I don’t want to be the reason you two stop talking to each other.”

Gentry barked a laugh, pulling me into his arms.

He leaned back, gazing into my eyes with his narrowed eyes. “Something else is bothering you.”

I screwed my lips to the side, wondering if I could get away with lying. I wasn’t particularly good at it anyway, and since he had a fresh rush of my blood in his veins, there was no point in trying. He’d read me too well. “It feels silly, my stressing about a relationship and friends when she’s out there plotting to do who knows what to us. I shouldn’t be thinking about anything else except stopping her.”

“Your life, what you feel, that’s what will get us through this mess. If you lose sight of what we’re fighting for in the first place, then what’s the point? Remember what Kiley told us about Aleister. He’s a part of us. Your love for each other might only be as friends, but it’s just as important as what we feel for each other.”

“Listen to you, being the all-wise vampire,” I murmured, and he beamed down at me.

The heated embrace that came next had my hands running through his messy hair. It was one of many moments we’d shared since last night. After Kiley dropped the hint that Gentry and I were destined to be together, all the pieces to the puzzle that made up our relationship rapidly clicked into place. Each time we kissed now, or when he held my
